NaNoWriMo

While trying to come up with a subject for a new entry here I suddenly got the idea to do some actual writing again. I haven’t written anything in a year, and since NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) is upon us I decided I was going to give that another try. I failed miserably last year; I was way too busy back then, mainly with my internship but there were also a lot of other things going on. I don’t have any good hopes for this year either, since I still have lots of work to do. I’m really not going to reach 50.000 words, I won’t even come close. But I just came up with a pretty nice idea, and I’m going to see how far I can take it.

I don’t know how this will affect my writing here, though. For me, writing requires my full attention or otherwise it won’t go. That goes for any writing, even blogs. So if I decide to really focus on NaNoWriMo, I don’t think there’ll be many entries here this month. But I know myself, and like I said I’m really not going to reach that 50.000, so perhaps I’ll give up real soon. Or maybe I’ll make some sort of compromise and ignore the 50.000 and just write whenever I feel like it. I don’t enjoy pressure on my writing anyway. Maybe it’s not such a good idea for me to even join a competition (against myself) like this in the first place. But like I said, I’m just going to see how far I can take it. It’ll be a while before I can really focus on it though, I’ll be pretty busy the next two weeks with school and work. I suspect I won’t write much at all.

Setting goals is good, in particular if they motivate you to get something done. It barely matters if the actual goal was attained, as long as you have accomplished more than you would have without the goal to work towards.

Well yes, that’s true. I didn’t reach the goal last year, but I did manage to write about 8500 words which I otherwise wouldn’t have done. I just don’t like this “quantity over quality” thing that this project promotes. But still, it does motivate people to actually write.
